Be sure to turn off color display on your monitor to see Nightingale operate at its fastest. (This is done using the Monitor control panel in your Macintosh's system).
To avoid unnecessary redrawing of the screen as you are entering symbols with the mouse, you may choose to turn off the "Auto Respace Bars" command (found under the Score menu). You can manually respace any measure by clicking anywhere in the measure, and then using the Respace Bars command (Cmd-R).
You can also avoid redrawing large regions of your score by "zooming in" to view an area containing only the one or two measures you wish to edit (using the Enlarge command). This way, you will wait only for a very few symbols in the score to be redrawn as you edit.
